St. Patrick's Day Brings About Unusual Traditions

Ah, St. Patrick’s Day, the time of year when it’s customary to dye the beer green, and overload our industrial dressers with nothing but green getup. It’s also the perfect excuse to host yet-another parade in New Orleans. Thankfully our Nadeau New Orleans storefront is close enough to be a part of all the festivities including the Downtown Irish Parade.

The parade, which runs down Piety Street before wrapping around Canal and ending up on Bourbon, will bring marchers, bands and tons of beads—something we give ourselves an excuse to wear every chance we get. It’s also the best place to rustle up some vegetables. You heard me. Every year people throw objects like carrots, potatoes, onions, moonpies, and even cabbages at spectators as they pass by (eh-em, ingredients in corned beef and cabbage); as long as they shout out the magic words “Throw me something, Mister!” The throwing of ingredients is a tradition that these days has expanded to flowers and undies for a kiss. Yes, these lacy treasures are also exchanged for a kiss on the cheek! Make sure to check out the parade this Thursday and learn more information on their official website!

The people of New Orleans are not the only ones taking St. Patrick’s Day to the next level. Believe it or not, India, where many of our unique furniture pieces are handmade, celebrates the holiday by lighting The Gateway of India in Mumbai completely green. And speaking of beer, the country stocks up on Murphy’s Irish Stout in virtually every pub in each major city.

So between hobnobbing at pubs and parades, visit us on our website or even stop by in person to say hello and peruse our eclectic range of imported furniture. St. Patrick’s Day is one of the indicators to Spring after all. And boy do we have affordable and soulful pieces that will brighten up your home! So stop by. We would love to see your green costumes too!
