Nadeau Neighborhood Spotlight: Portland

Here at Nadeau, we value our community just as much as you do. We’re farmer’s market-hoppers, culture-seekers, furniture-lovers (of course), and most of all, we’re locals. That’s why we’re excited to bring you the second installment of our series devoted to the neighborhoods we call home. We chatted with store manager, Corinna Koopman, to find out Nadeau Portland’s best places to eat, drink, and, of course, shop.

How long have you been working for Nadeau?

I have been working at Nadeau for almost a year. It’s been a great adventure so far!

What is your favorite thing about working at Nadeau?

I love to be a part of the ever-changing inventory of beautiful pieces that come in, but my favorite thing about working at Nadeau is helping customers bring their spaces to life. I love it when customers come in with pictures of a room, and challenge me to find the perfect piece. It’s great when they come back and show me how the room came together!

Where is your favorite neighborhood spot to grab lunch?

There are so many amazing places in the Pearl to grab lunch. My favorites would have to be Cha! Cha! Cha! for tasty and affordable Mexican food, or Tilt, which has the best BLT I’ve ever had. The food carts on Washington Street also have every kind of food you could ever want or think of.

What’s your favorite activity to do in the neighborhood?

There is always some sort of event or festival taking place in the Pearl District. We have First Thursday every month. Businesses like Oblation Papers and Press (who hand-make paper on site!) stay open a little later and often offer free food and drinks. There are also the many many breweries that Portland is so famous for. Places like Deschutes, 10 Barrel, and Rogue call the Pearl home. If you’re looking for local, MadeHere PDX is full of high quality products made in Portland. A trip to the Pearl would also not be complete without checking out Powell’s Books, which occupies a whole city block and is so easy to lose an afternoon in.

What is something that stands out and makes your community/neighborhood unique?

The Pearl is a special part of Portland, because nowhere else will you find award-winning restaurants, renowned art galleries, local boutiques and clothing stores, all squeezed together within a few beautiful city blocks.

How do you see Nadeau impacting the local community?

Nadeau plays an important role in the Pearl District, because we bring a variety and affordability that can be hard to come by in this area of the city. Many of our competitors have beautiful designer-based product that is out of reach of the average buyer. Nadeau’s hand-made and eclectic style brings something no one else has and provides diversity to our community.

Tell us one of your favorite customer stories!

I am lucky to work at a place that has so many great customers. Being in the Pearl District I have the chance to meet people from around the world, as tourists and business people often stay in this area. I had a couple, Melissa and David, who moved here to open a restaurant, and they purchased quite a few pieces from us for both their new home and restaurant, the Hairy Lobster. I later found out that Melissa is actually an award winning pastry chef! It’s been great to have them back in the store and hear about the success of their restaurant.
